LiveAnalysis' methodology employs a small JavaScript code (478 bytes) that is embedded within each HTML page, ad or email to be measured. When an Internet user requests a page/ad/email containing the code, a browser will render the page/ad/email and in the process read and execute the JavaScript. The code contains an image request for a 1x1 pixel GIF that is invisible or "clear". Requests for the GIF are made to the LiveAnalysis server allowing for data collection. This process is completely transparent to the user and does not affect the user's experience in any way.
To precisely track how an end-user is interacting with your Web site, the information in the user's browser, a header request, is captured, summarized and analyzed before being stored in LiveAnalysis' proprietary OODB (Object-Oriented Database). Because this request is made at the browser level, the GIF request will be sent to LiveAnalysis even if the page is served from cache.
The following illustration provides a step-by-step explanation of how LiveAnalysis' browser side measurement technology works.
|
- John Doe accesses the Internet via his company network and requests the CNN Web site home page.
- The request for the page is routed through the corporate firewall or proxy server to the CNN Web server.
- The CNN Web servers log files record the event.
- CNN delivers this page to the corporate firewall/proxy server, which stores a copy and forwards it to the user.
- The CNN page has been tagged with a virtual link to the LiveAnalysis server, which records all the requests made for that page regardless of whether they are delivered out of cache or not.
- When Mary Smith requests the CNN page from behind the same firewall or proxy server, she is delivered the cached page. This prevents CNN’s site from recording the visit.
- But: the cached page still has a link to the LiveAnalysis server, so LiveAnalysis knows that Mary Smith visited the CNN, even though CNN does not.
- CNN access their real-time statistics on demand by logging onto the LiveAnalysis web site.
- LiveAnalysis summarizes the visitor data. The technology distinguishes between John Doe and Mary Smith, enabling accurate reporting of unique and return visitors.
